We're Renovating the Facade!

For decades, Thornes Marketplace has offered shelter to shoppers within and to pedestrians without. On Monday, August 4th the collection of stores will begin putting new face to its exterior.

The iconic green awning on Main Street, a Thornes fixture since the 1980s, is in disrepair and needs to be replaced, the owners said Friday in a press release. While they're at it, Thornes will install a new sign that harks back to the one on McCallum’s Department Store, which occupied the site for more than a century until it was sold and became the multi-shop indoor mall that is Thornes.

The sign will feature tall metal letters similar to the aluminum scrips used by McCallum’s. Thornes Facility Manager Jon McGee said the new awning, like the old one, will be green.

“That awning has been here at Thornes longer than I have, which is saying something," McGee said. "We do want folks to know that we will be installing a new green awning in its place. It will be smaller and a different color green, but you’ll still be able to tell your friends to meet you at Thornes under the green awning.”

The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-September. The main entrance to Thornes and the entrance to Cedar Chest will remain fully functional while the work is completed.
